How to Buy an AC in India?

Buying an AC is one of those purchases where getting the specification wrong can cost you for years.
A cheaper AC isn't necessarily cheaper to own, and a higher star rating doesn't compensate for choosing the wrong capacity.
Here's what actually matters.
1. Choose the right tonnage first
The first question isn't:
"Which AC brand should I buy?"
It's:
"How much cooling does my room need?"
A rough starting point:

- Top floor
- Ceiling height
- Number of occupants
- Windows
- Insulation
- Local climate
A 1.5-ton AC is commonly suited to medium-sized rooms, but the exact requirement depends on the room and heat load. Panasonic, for example, currently specifies its 1.5-ton 2026 model for roughly 120–170 sq ft.
2. Inverter vs non-inverter
For most people buying a new split AC, inverter is the better choice.
An inverter compressor can vary its output according to cooling demand rather than constantly switching between full power and off.
That can improve:
- Energy efficiency
- Temperature stability
- Comfort
- Noise
3. Don't just look at the star rating
The BEE star rating is useful, but also look at ISEER.
ISEER measures seasonal energy efficiency and gives you a better basis for comparing models.
For example, Panasonic's 2026 1.5-ton 5-star model lists an ISEER of 5.80 and annual energy consumption of 681.01 kWh.
Why this matters
If your AC runs 2 hours/day, energy efficiency may matter less. If it runs 8–12 hours/day, efficiency can materially affect your electricity bill.
4. Look at cooling capacity
Tonnage is a useful shorthand, but the technical cooling capacity in watts is also worth checking.
Two "1.5-ton" ACs aren't necessarily identical in every performance characteristic.
Also look at the operating temperature range if you live somewhere extremely hot. Some current models are designed to operate at ambient temperatures around 52–55°C.
5. Convertible modes can be useful
Many newer ACs advertise 5-in-1, 6-in-1, 8-in-1 convertible cooling.
The idea is that you can reduce the cooling capacity when the room doesn't need maximum output.
This can be useful for:
- Different room sizes
- Lower occupancy
- Night-time use
- Reducing power consumption
But don't buy an AC just because it says "8-in-1." Look at actual efficiency and cooling specifications.
6. Copper condenser and corrosion protection
For Indian conditions, look for:
- Copper tubing
- Corrosion protection
- Appropriate condenser coating
This becomes particularly relevant in coastal areas.
7. Smart features are optional
Wi-Fi, apps, voice control and AI modes can be convenient. But they shouldn't determine your purchase.
Prioritise: Capacity → efficiency → cooling → reliability → service
Then consider: Wi-Fi → AI → smart controls
8. Installation is part of the purchase
Don't compare AC prices without considering:
- Installation
- Additional copper pipe
- Stand/brackets
- Drain pipe
- Electrical work
- Stabiliser, if required
A ₹40,000 AC can become a ₹45,000+ purchase after installation and extras.
9. Service matters
ACs are long-term appliances. Before buying, check:
- Who will install it?
- How good is the service network in your city?
- What does the warranty actually cover?
This can be more important than a minor difference in cooling specifications.

Choose the right capacity first. Then optimise for efficiency, cooling and service.
Don't spend ₹10,000 more for smart features if the underlying AC isn't the right fit for your room.
